Recent events have directly impacted our Kol Tikvah community, as our direct response to the threat of violence and anti-Semitism has been a number of enhancements to our security protocol, including additional armed guards. Unfortunately, these increased safety measures have come at an unanticipated cost, and we need your support to ensure our community remains well protected. KOL TIKVAH RESPONDS TO THE WAR IN ISRAEL
On Saturday, October 7th, the Jewish community was rocked with the news coming out of Southern Israel that the terrorist organization Hamas had launched a full-scale invasion into Israel, killing over 1,000 innocent civilians, and capturing at least 199 others – many being women and children.
In the days that followed, our community responded:
- Congregation Kol Tikvah created a space to pray and process the horrific scene unfolding, and was among the first Jewish institutions in Broward County to do so with a session led by Rabbi Boxman on Sunday morning, October 8. Since that initial service, our clergy has served our community, providing pastoral care to any and all who needed it.
- The Jewish Federation of Broward County and the Jewish Federations of North America quickly responded in opening an Emergency Appeal to help Israel. Broward County has a goal of $3.5 million to be raised, and Kol Tikvah immediately responded in giving the opportunity with our congregation. The power of the Jewish people lay within our community, and partnering with the Federation provides the greatest opportunity for an immediate impact for those who wish to make one.
- Through the generosity of CKT congregants Beth Alhanti, Ellen Fox-Snider and Mindy Bachove, we provided licensed clinical mental health professionals for any congregants who needed additional support on Sunday, October 15.
- On October 18, we had two trained therapy dog teams through Canine Assisted Therapy visit our campus and meet with our teachers and administrative staff, who have been under immense pressure to ensure that the normalcy of our operations continued while addressing the need for increased security.
- We made strategic decisions, improving the hard and soft security measures we already had in place. We are fortunate to have incredible partners with the Parkland Sherriff’s Office and the Secure Community Network – the security and intelligence bureau dedicated to the Jewish Community.
- Rabbi Boxman is giving out free Israel bracelets to anyone who wants one – simply stop by and say hi! All we ask is a consideration for a gift to his discretionary fund, with those funds going to some of the opportunities listed below.
As we are committed to Israel’s right to defend itself and eliminate any hostile threat to its freedom, sovereignty, and right to exist, we acknowledge the current military actions in Gaza and other surrounding areas will likely be a prolonged conflict.
Many congregants have asked how they can help in this critical moment and we are happy to share the opportunities listed below.
Kol Tikvah is proud to fully support the following initiatives:
- Donate to the Jewish Federation of Broward County’s Emergency Israel Appeal: https://jewishbroward.org/Israel-emergency-fund-2/
- Longtime Kol Tikvah Congregant Dr. Jerry Sussman works with The Israel Trauma Care Project, a part of the Southwest Center for the Study of Hospital and Health Care Systems. Donations to the Israel Trauma Care Project directly support the work of these centers and will be used to reinforce their efforts with staffing, logistics, training and equipment. In addition to the above, the following are very reputable organizations doing incredible work here in the United States and on the ground in Israel.
- Write to your Senator, requesting them to confirm an Ambassador to Israel immediately via the Anti-Defamation League – https://adl.salsalabs.org/jack-lew-israel/index.html?eType=ActivityDefinitionInstance&eId=e6a0f23e-8f7d-4c21-bb13-50cbed36d58f
- Make a gift to the Anti-Defamation League, as they work to fight anti-semitism and extremism: https://www.adl.org/take-action/ways-to-give?donate=1. Congregation Kol Tikvah was recently accepted to ADL’s Kulanu Program, a special program for synagogues to learn how to fight anti-semitism and bigotry.

As these days move forward, we can only hope for not only a return to peace on the borders of Israel, but also a return of those currently held captive.
Am Yisrael Chai!
